Built-up water bills
Question from Fanny updated on 19th June 2014:
I have been in a property for two years and have only received a water bill at the end of my tenancy for $580, four six monthly bills. Shouldn't they have sent the bills to me as soon as they had been received? Now I have to pay two years worth of water bills when it could of been resolved earlier.
Our expert Juliet Robinson responded:

You haven’t said where you live. Some local authorities invoice for water two to four times a year while in Auckland water invoices are issued monthly. It seems that you have been quite economical with your usage if you have incurred charges averaging $290 per year. There should have been an opportunity for the landlord to on-charge you after each invoice is received. You should talk with your landlord and ask why you have not been charged until now. You may be able to make a payment arrangement.
