Good property manager please?

Question from Michael updated on 4th June 2014:

My wife and I have held property in Dunedin for several years. In the past year we have had serious issues with the property manager who has let some bad things happen. Now that one property is up for re-letting we have been having more issues. When I began communicating with the manager of the business he took responsibility for nothing so I then provided a short list of the issues. We subsequently received a notice of termination. Sadly, if I needed a money collection agency then I could easily do this myself and would not need a property management company. What I have been paying for is for my properties to be looked after and this is what has not been happening as there has been no professionalism since the previous manager left. I do not want to repeat my bad experience and wonder if your organisation can possibly provide the names of some reputable businesses to manage our properties? We do not want to go from one bad business to the next?

Our expert Juliet Robinson responded:

Property investor associations are great sources of information about property management companies, suppliers and trades contractors in their local area.  Joining your local association is a good investment that provides you with a large number of industry contacts.  Professional property managers thrive on good reputations and news travels fast via word of mouth.   Local knowledge is invaluable!  I suggest you contact the Otago Property Investors’ Association at kennoelbates@gmail.com.  Noeline Bates will be happy to help you.
