Heat pump request
Question from Nina updated on 8th April 2019:
I have asked my landlord if they could kindly install a Heatpump/AC in our property. We have been tenants for over a year and just renewed. The landord and property management have thanked us for taking care of the property. The house was brand new when we rented it and we requested an AC last year, but the landlord refused saying he might revisit the idea next year. I am now awaiting their response. What is the best approach for this? What if they refuse - would they allow us to install it? We cannot open windows since we have a bush next door with loads of bugs.
Our expert Bernard Parker responded:

You appear to have rented the property without a heat pump. I suggest you speak again with your landlord to see if he is open to installing one. The recent Government announcement about Healthy Homes Standards will be relevant, as all rental properties will require some form of heating to be installed in living areas. That raises the option of a heat pump as an economic and clean form of heating to satisfy the Standards. This question will be a very popular topic discussed in the next few months as landlords and tenants look forward to the implementation of the Healthy Homes Standards.
