Maximum occupants - when two become three?

Question from WhiteE updated on 20th August 2013:

Our contract states that our tenancy is for two adults. What happens if I get pregnant and have a baby or babies? What are my rights?

Our expert Juliet Robinson responded:

You were probably only two adults at the start of the tenancy. Having children is a normal part of our society’s way of life. I can’t think of any reason why a reasonable landlord would complain about a new baby arriving in your household. Most tenancy agreements will have provision for you to notify the landlord of an additional occupant, and a landlord is not allowed to withhold permission unreasonably.
